Are You Unintentionally Sabotaging Your Diet Plan?

By Ada Simmons

We all understand that the best foods for our diets are lean meats, whole grains and healthy fats. These are the food items that will give us the energy and protein we need. They keep people nutritionally well balanced with minimal calories while we work hard to reduce our fat at the gym. Did you realize however that a number of the diet foods you've been eating may have been hindering your ability to lose weight? They can also be making you gain additional pounds! Here are a few of the foods which may be undermining your diet efforts.

Sports Drinks may not be serving you at all. You've probably been told that if you need to help your body replenish itself after a work out, you should drink a sports drink. Most doctors will tell you, though, that if your workout isn't going to go over ninety minutes then you ought to be fine just by drinking water. Sports drinks are full of sugar and calories and a large amount of other things you don't need including artificial flavors and colors which defeat any attempts at eating only natural products. Choose chocolate milk for your beverage as an alternative. Your body utilizes the sugar inside the chocolate for muscle tissue repair and everyone knows how good milk is for you.

You don't need protein shakes. So many people think that drinking a protein shake is a good way to stop cravings when it isn't meal time. When you're eating an normally healthy diet, however, a protein shake simply sends you into protein overdose. Contrary to popular belief, protein doesn't get stored as muscle, it gets stored as fat. This means that if you have already ingested too much protein that day, your system will merely store what it doesn't need in your fat cells and that doesn't help you lose weight or inches of your waist line at all.

Pre-packaged deli meat seriously isn't really healthy at all. You may possibly think that a sandwich made from whole wheat bread and pre-packaged lean deli meat makes for a good lunch. The real truth is that pre-packaged deli meat is crammed full of preservatives and also about a third of your suggested daily sodium intake. This will be especially dangerous if you are at risk of contracting heart disease. Instead of choosing deli meat, choose home grilled chicken or other poultry or fresh deli meat that you can get sliced at the deli counter. Sure these kinds of choices are more high priced but they are much healthier for you in the long run.

There are all sorts of things that we assume will help us lose weight: eating a whole wheat bagel in the morning, for example is actually a lot worse for you than a bowl of oatmeal with some cinnamon sprinkled into it for flavor. Ask your doctor which food items are best for you and then eat those. If you are careful about what exactly you ingest and treat your body well, losing weight should not be that big of an issue for you!
